The Anthem is something sung at the beginning of a schoolday, or at a baseball game. The Anthem is rarely something spontaneous, something irresistible. Yet, still, all day I’ve been watching videos from across the country and they all share this in common, the abrupt and emphatic song. They share this in common, too; at the line “The land of the free” the crowd always breaks out cheering, drowning out the final line. It happened in New York, in multiple locations in fact, in DC, Seattle and elsewhere. It happened here at Connecticut College, too, albeit on a smaller scale. Several hundred of us marched through the middle of campus cheering, making our way to the green. There were fireworks and, yes, the National Anthem. A friend of mind commented, “I’ve never sang that and meant it.” And yes, when we all sang “The land of the free” there were horn blasts and whoops of joy. It brings me back to Langston Hughes:
…O, let America be America again—
The land that never has been yet—
And yet must be—the land where every man is free…This is something new.
Dear old Union Square. Dear old haunt. Wish I could’ve been there.
Banner yet wave O’er the land of the free...the home of the brave? It does. Even as we...
reminds me of every single fraternity event, ever.

That darn Fake America stealing our national anthem! ;) It’s easy to say I’ve loved everything today. But seriously.
They should play this version at all baseball, basketball and other professional sporting events going forward....
